DEEKAY: My Life Changed When I Met Davido

Starting off his music career in Ghana, fast
rising act, Deekay met fortune after an
encounter with Davido who took instant
interest in his music. He is out with a new
single titled, "Repete" and he is set to
release the video also. Deekay is signed on
to HKN Music In a recent interview with
Tosin Clegg, he talks about his experience
thus far and future projects
How did music start for you?
I have actually been doing music way back when
I was in school. Even when I was young, I liked
music. When I finished school in Ghana and
decided to get back to music, I met Davido. He
came to Ghana then and we met. I played a song
and he liked it. So, we worked on a song
together and from there we became friends.
Later, he said I should join HKN and that was
how it started.
What's your style of music?
I do different types of music. I can actually rap
and sing. I am able to blend different styles of
music like R and B, Afro pop and rap.
What was your childhood ambition?
Growing up, I wanted to be a pilot but it
changed. I grew from wanting to become a pilot
to an architect. But I studied building
technology. So, I was quite close.
How many singles are out so far?
'Repete' is my 1st official single under HKN Music
but I have dropped a song before which was a
freestyle that I dropped during Davido's
birthday. And I had "High Fever" that I did back
in Ghana with Davido but didn't want to push
because I wanted to start afresh. But it was a
nice song and Davido rapped. This new song was
produced by Shizzi. It's a dance song and we
made it in a danceable way as people already
know me for my dance steps. So, I just decided
to use that as my 1st single. I had a couple of
songs though but I just choose that.
What makes you different from others?
Because I can do a lot of things. I can dance,
sing, rap and I got swag. Mine is knowing what
to wear that fits you.
How is life aside music?
I am a down to earth person. I love humans and I
love making friends. And I hate people that hate
me. Because if you hate me, that means you are
not human. That's what I think and I don't take
things too seriously; just the basics of life we
have to stick too.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
As the biggest thing out of Africa and doing
music largely. Fashion is my thing also and hopes
to dive into it, maybe in the next two years when
I am well balanced.
What has kept you going?
I have listened to a lot of people and I have
listened to their capabilities and my own also and
I know that I can do equally same or better and
that has kept me going. And my mum
supporting my music finally because it was a
struggle way back. She is a Christian and was of
the opinion that I should do gospel music but
finally she allowed me do my thing.
So far, who have been your influences?
My biggest influence? You know I used to like
Dbanj and Wande and Davido also with all those
that do good music. There are so many good
artistes but these ones got crowd that follow
them up. And the industry should know Deekay
is here to stay.
